12/14/2011 - DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 337th Test and Evaluation Squadron completed tests on the Sustainment Block-14B/Laptop Controlled Targeting Pod Phase II upgrade to a B-1 Bomber, allowing seamless integration of the GBU-54 Laser Joint Direct Attack Munition increasing the B-1's ability to attack moving targets.
The long-range bombers displayed capabilities of the upgrade by successfully hitting 22 of 22 stationary and moving, ground and maritime targets. The test program consisted of 15 developmental test sorties flown at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, with the 419th Flight Test Squadron from Edwards AFB, Calif., and 20 operational test sorties conducted by the 337 TES.

11/30/2011 - LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Just as consumer products are tested before they are sold commercially, software and hardware used by cyber operators are dissected, analyzed and tested to determine how they work before being deployed within the vast Air Force network.
The strengths, limitations and vulnerabilities of such cyber systems are tested by the 346th Test Squadron here daily.

11/21/2011 - ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. -- An ongoing store separation test on "smart weapons" from the bomb bay of a new 10-percent scale B-52H model in the 16-foot transonic propulsion wind tunnel here rightly has the attention of test engineers.
Prior to the test, all eyes were on AEDC designers, schedulers and machinists as they shepherded the B-52H Stratofortress model through concept drawings to fabrication to assembly, all in record time.
As the model came together, Doyle Veazey, the ATA store separation section manager, and Don Arrowood, the project's B-52 Program Office/SEEK Eagle Office engineer, were already considering what the future might hold for the latest test asset.

Air Force announces civilian workforce restructuring

by Lt. Col. Cynthia Anderson
Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs
11/2/2011 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Air Force officials announced several adjustments to the civilian workforce. In response to direction from the Secretary of Defense for DOD to stop civilian growth above fiscal year 2010 levels and the need to add 5,900 positions against the Air Force's top priorities, the Air Force eliminated approximately 9,000 positions. These adjustments reflect several initiatives designed to align limited resources based on Air Forces priorities. This process is an ongoing effort to increase efficiencies, reduce overhead and eliminate redundancy.
"We can't be successful without our talented and experienced civilian workforce," said Michael B. Donley, Secretary of the Air Force. "We are making difficult choices about how to deliberately restructure and posture the force and will continue to look for new ways of accomplishing the mission," said Donley. "We can't afford business as usual."

The bomber has been a vital combat asset for the past decade. Tinker personnel have overcome maintenance obstacles, engineered prototype fixes, installed modifications in record time and streamlined processes to keep the fleet airborne.
Tinker’s B-1 System Program Office reached an impressive and unlikely feat Oct. 27. The planning and programming office supported 2,000 consecutive days of real world combat operations for the B-1B Lancer platform.

Building an Efficient, High-Performance Engine
|
Posted by admin on Thursday, October 27 @ 08:05:10 MDT (113 reads)
The science and technology phase of the Air Force's Adaptive Versatile Engine Technology, or ADVENT, program is expected to wrap up in Fiscal 2013, according to Kevin Geiss, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for energy. Under ADVENT—an Air Force Research Laboratory-led effort—the Air Force is hoping to develop an engine for military aircraft that is both high performance and fuel efficient, Geiss told attendees at his AFA-Air Force presentation Wednesday in Arlington, Va. Today's high-performance engines, such as those on the F-16 fighter, tend to guzzle jet fuel. Other engines are highly efficient, but only within a limited performance range. ADVENT looks to "bridge that gap," said Geiss.

10/12/2011 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- An Edwards team is hard at work providing proof the Galaxy is expanding.
The C-5 Galaxy is expanding its capabilities through hardware and software upgrades that will position the monster transport aircraft for the successful completion of its Air Force mission for the next 40 years.
After major subsystem upgrades, a C-5M Super Galaxy is now at the Air Force Flight Test Center for testing to verify that everything works as it should.
"The plane has been upgraded for Block 3.5 software improvements, which also includes some hardware changes," said Raina Saccone, 418th Flight Test Squadron, Block 3.5 upgrade project engineer.
