5/11/2012 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- The B-1 System Program Office from Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., earned an Air Staff-level award recognizing the Air Force Materiel Command program office with the most improved aircraft maintenance and logistics readiness performance.

William Barnes, the deputy chief of the B-1 System Program Office at Tinker was presented the Dr. James G. Roche Sustainment Excellence award by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz during a Pentagon ceremony on May 9.

According to award documents, Airmen and contractors with the office worked to increase their B-1 Lancer warfighter fleet availability by 10 percent during fiscal 2011. This increase created the highest B-1 availability rate in the last four years.

"The B-1 is highly prized at the moment," said Jeff Vaughn, the chief engineer of the B-1 System Program Office. "And this award tells us we're improving in every area we can think of."

4/11/2012 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Discussion of the quick reaction capability process was a key part of the presentation by Col. Anthony Genatempo, Airborne Network Division senior materiel leader, to the Hanscom Representatives Association at Hanscom's Minuteman Commons April 5.

"I think this is one of the coolest things since sliced bread to hit the acquisition community - the quick reaction process," he said. "What it does is empower people like me to cut through the bureaucracy."

Explaining the process by highlighting parts of an unusually thin Air Force governing instruction, Genatempo said that acquirers must make a materiel development decision within 30 days of requirements being validated. From there, they have less than six months to field the capability - including testing - and then six months to analyze how well it does in the field.

Airborne Laser Test Bed bids adieu to Edwards AFB

2/24/2012 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFNS) -- The aircraft known for turning science fiction into fact, more accurately recognized as the YAL-1A Airborne Laser Test Bed, took to the skies here for the last time during its final ferry flight to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., Feb. 14.

The ALTB, which was a part of the Birk Flight Test Facility here for more than nine years, was a modified Boeing 747-400 Freighter that housed two solid-state lasers and a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser that could use directed energy as a viable technology against ballistic missiles.

"February 14 represents the end of a historic era in airborne directed energy research, not only for Edwards Air Force Base but for the Department of Defense at large," said Lt. Col. Jeff Warmka, the director of the ALTB Combined Test Force. "When the aircraft departs, she won't be coming back to Edwards Air Force Base. The test program is closing, so to us it's a sad and reflective day ... but not without optimism and great pride because we intimately know the program's historic achievements and know what we did will benefit the nation in the future."

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. -- Everywhere you look, people are tapping, talking and swiping away at smartphones and tablets. Rapidly-emerging technologies give users information immediately, and these super machines fit easily in the palm of your hand.

The Air Force is planning to implement these high-tech handhelds into daily operations and, in preparation, the Air Force C2 Integration Center kicked off the Joint Expeditionary Force Experiment here Jan. 13.

Dubbed Unified Communications I, the goal is to determine commercial cellular carriers' ability to provide sufficient service to support the Air Force's mission sets.

According to Ken Gunter, the JEFX event manager, the four-week experiment will test the networks and hardware of Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint to see if the carriers will accommodate communications needs.

Teams of emergency response, civil engineer and maintenance Airmen will use Apple iOS and Google Android-based smartphones, tablets and mobile hotspot devices in a variety of scenarios to test their functionality and effectiveness.

ORS-1, ground system gain final ops acceptance

Schriever AFB CO (SPX) Feb 07, 2012

The Operationally Responsive Space-1 satellite took approximately three years to develop from concept to launch and orbit, compared to traditional satellite systems, which typically take seven years or longer to develop.

When Gen. William Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, declared the Operationally Responsive Space-1 satellite had achieved final operational capability in early January, the announcement marked a significant milestone for the 1st Space Operations Squadron and 7th Space Operations Squadrons as well as their mission partners.
