5/8/2013 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- When the X-51A Waverider program was established, the test team set out to demonstrate the viability of air-breathing scramjet propulsion. The goal of the $300 million concept-demonstrator program became reality May 1 when the test team achieved a record- setting 210 seconds of air-breathing hypersonic flight.

"This mission was a full success. We boosted for roughly 26 seconds and then we were on powered scramjet for three and a half minutes. We flew the mission until we exhausted the fuel. We took aerodynamic data on the cruiser from unpowered all the way until we flew it in the ocean," said Charlie Brink, X-51A program manager, from the Air Force Research Laboratory's Aerospace Systems Directorate.

5/8/2013 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In 2006, the C-5 Galaxy underwent a "super" upgrade to further strengthen the airframe's worldwide airlift capabilities. Test teams here and at Dover Air Force Base, Del., are showing why the recent software upgrade to the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory -- now known as the C-5M Super Galaxy -- is no small task.

With initial modifications being tested at Dover AFB, the aircraft has been ferried back to Edwards AFB where the remaining flight test sorties are being accomplished during May.

"The C-5M Super Galaxy Block 3.5.2 software upgrade is intended to correct 72 deficiency reports that were documented during previous C-5M test programs," said Joel Williams, 775th Test Squadron C-5 lead engineer at the 418th Flight Test Squadron.

TPS students ready Auto ACAS for initial testing

April 14, 2013

Edward Air Force Base, The Government of USA has issued the following news release:
EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Members of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School's Class 12B (TPS 12B) recently completed proof of concept and risk reduction testing on the Automatic Air Collision Avoidance System (Auto ACAS), developed to reduce the number of air-to-air collisions among U.S. fighter fleets.
The HAVE POSIT II test team took vital steps to help the Air Force Research Laboratory and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics refine this leading-edge, sense and avoid technology, scheduled for initial testing here with the 416th Flight Test Squadron next January.

Even before graduation in June, the students are making valuable, real-world contributions to flight test. The students' inputs will play an important role in shaping Auto ACAS, which could help save lives and preserve valuable Air Force assets in the years to come.

"A lot of people think of the Test Pilot School as just a schoolhouse. But, we are a research institution as well. We have a repository of past research and we are also a laboratory for current leading-edge research and development," said Col. Lawrence Hoffman, USAF TPS commandant.

Edwards test team extends KC-135 capabilities

4/24/2013 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Known as "The Mighty War Wagon" of the United States Air Force, the KC-135 Stratotanker has proven to be the core aerial refueling capability for the Air Force for more than 50 years.

With the help of the 418th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards, along with a multitude of testers, the KC-135 Block 45 test team recently completed a series of tests in April to help extend the aircraft's service life for decades.

"There are currently 419 KC-135s and 59 KC-10s that enhance the Air Force's capability to accomplish its primary mission of Global Reach while providing aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft. These aircraft also provide mission support including cargo, aeromedical evacuation, personnel transport, and a variety of other specialized missions," said Maj. John Mikal, 418th FLTS KC-135 Block 45 lead project test pilot. "Increasing the life expectancy of the current Air Force tanker fleet is critical. Ongoing upgrade programs help to ensure there is no gap in these mission capabilities, while the new KC-46 program starts replacing the aging KC-135 fleet."

12/20/2012 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center here recently put out a request for proposal to move the Space Fence program forward.

Space Fence will be a system of up to two land-based radars, the first site located at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, to track objects entering Earth's orbit. According to program officials, it will form the foundation of improved space situational awareness by expanding the ability to detect, track, identify and characterize orbiting objects such as commercial and military satellites, smaller objects, maneuvering satellites, break-up events and lower inclination objects.

"Space situational awareness is a continual concern and challenge for U.S. and ally nations," said Ken Francois, Space Fence program manager. "The Space Fence program will increase the capability to provide predictability in reducing the chance of a collision or attack."
