JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. -- Everywhere you look, people are tapping, talking and swiping away at smartphones and tablets. Rapidly-emerging technologies give users information immediately, and these super machines fit easily in the palm of your hand.
The Air Force is planning to implement these high-tech handhelds into daily operations and, in preparation, the Air Force C2 Integration Center kicked off the Joint Expeditionary Force Experiment here Jan. 13.
Dubbed Unified Communications I, the goal is to determine commercial cellular carriers' ability to provide sufficient service to support the Air Force's mission sets.
According to Ken Gunter, the JEFX event manager, the four-week experiment will test the networks and hardware of Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint to see if the carriers will accommodate communications needs.
Teams of emergency response, civil engineer and maintenance Airmen will use Apple iOS and Google Android-based smartphones, tablets and mobile hotspot devices in a variety of scenarios to test their functionality and effectiveness.

ORS-1, ground system gain final ops acceptance
by Scott Prater
Schriever AFB CO (SPX) Feb 07, 2012
The Operationally Responsive Space-1 satellite took approximately three years to develop from concept to launch and orbit, compared to traditional satellite systems, which typically take seven years or longer to develop.
When Gen. William Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, declared the Operationally Responsive Space-1 satellite had achieved final operational capability in early January, the announcement marked a significant milestone for the 1st Space Operations Squadron and 7th Space Operations Squadrons as well as their mission partners.

USAF Reveals Latest X-Plane: X-56A
|
Posted by admin on Wednesday, February 01 @ 23:16:33 MST (72 reads)
EDWARDS AFB, Calif. — A new U.S. Air Force X-plane designated X-56A will explore active control technology for potential use in future high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) reconnaissance aircraft.
Designed by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works, the X-56A flying wing will also later be flown by NASA, and is an innovative modular unmanned air vehicle designed to test active flutter suppression and gust load alleviation. These technologies are considered vital for the successful development of the slender, lightweight, high-aspect-ratio wings that could be used by future transports as well as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance UAVs.
Formerly dubbed the Multi-Use Technology Testbed (MUTT), the UAV will test to the edge of the flight envelope where flutter occurs. Flutter is the potentially catastrophic dynamic coupling that can occur between the elastic motion of the wing and the aerodynamic loads acting on it. If a test goes too far and a wing fails in flight, the X-56A is fitted with a fuselage-mounted ballistic parachute recovery system.

The long-range bombers displayed capabilities of the upgrade by successfully hitting 22 of 22 stationary and moving, ground and maritime targets. The test program consisted of 15 developmental test sorties flown at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, with the 419th Flight Test Squadron from Edwards AFB, Calif., and 20 operational test sorties conducted by the 337 TES.

11/21/2011 - ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. -- An ongoing store separation test on "smart weapons" from the bomb bay of a new 10-percent scale B-52H model in the 16-foot transonic propulsion wind tunnel here rightly has the attention of test engineers.
Prior to the test, all eyes were on AEDC designers, schedulers and machinists as they shepherded the B-52H Stratofortress model through concept drawings to fabrication to assembly, all in record time.
As the model came together, Doyle Veazey, the ATA store separation section manager, and Don Arrowood, the project's B-52 Program Office/SEEK Eagle Office engineer, were already considering what the future might hold for the latest test asset.
